Barcham Road in Soham is a long established residential area with a number of residential properties of a mixture of styles both 2 storey and single storey design. There is also commercial premises/ land along the road with the main business being a tree nursery at the end of Barcham Road.
An eclectic range of properties from traditional style to contemporary, exist on the road.
There had been a recent history of contradictory decisions, some approved and some refused, on previous planning applications made along this road and we established that the main issue for refusals being the fact that Barcham Road, being a 60mph limit, in some of the planners views was ‘unsustainable’ due to the fact that there is no proper pathway up to the point where it meets with The Shade – from which point there is a suitable pathway provision the rest of the way into the centre of the town.
We designed a three bedroom dwelling in a typical ‘Suffolk’ style with the master bedroom and Ensuite within the roof space. The scheme incorporated some environmental sustainable features such as an air source heat pump serving underfloor heating throughout.
We made an argument within our Design and Access statement as to why we believed this application should be approved. It was eventually referred to committee and our arguments were accepted by the Committee and the scheme was duly passed.
Our client decided to carry out a self-build construction process using sub-contractors and KJ architects carried out site inspections during the construction and issued an Architects Certificate on completion.
