On this commercial architecture project, KJ Architects aimed to design an innovative new focal point in Mildenhall for Forest Heath District Council, whilst reflecting and complimenting the style of Market Cross; a focal point of the community which was established by Royal Charter in 1412 and has survived to this day. The history of the town has been included in the Bus Station around the central column, with historic buildings incorporated into the decoration.
Commercial Architectural Services with KJ Architects
The building comprises a zinc-clad octagonal roof, supported by one single central column. This allows a completely free space around the remainder of the octagon, uninterrupted by structure, allowing free and easy circulation through the building. The roof also has a large overhang, providing external shelter from the weather to the public.
The non-loadbearing external walls are separated from the roof via clerestory glazing, giving the impression that the roof is floating. This is especially apparent at night, when the glazing strip is illuminated from inside the building.
