Bungalow Extension


Proposed Extension to Bungalow at Swynford Paddocks, Six Mile Bottom, Near Cambridge

KJ Architects were approached late in 2015 by the current owners of ‘The Bungalow’ at Swynford Paddocks Near Cambridge to initially design an extension for a new large kitchen.

During the first discussions for the kitchen the brief grew and grew to incorporate a new formal dining room, a family room, A new master bedroom suite with ensuite bathroom, dressing room and a spare bedroom at first floor.

The existing bungalow is only 3 bedroomed probably built in the early 1960’s and had some extensions built in the 1960’s and 70’s to create a barbeque area and an octagonal music room. The bungalow is built of common bricks and painted white and is looking quite tired inside and out.

The bungalow sits in several acres of landscaped gardens with fantastic views West towards Cambridge.

Working closely with the clients we developed a scheme incorporating a first floor master suite that incorporated a balcony making the most of the views West.

The barbeque area, which was rarely used, and the music room have been demolished to make way for the new proposals. The end result is that not only does the new proposal give the client what they wanted so that they could enjoy living there for many years to come, but the proposal turns the dwelling into a five bedroomed house which will increase the value by a far greater amount than the cost of the extension.

It was important that the design took account of the ground and floor levels on that side of the house and garden which enabled us to carefully incorporate the two storey element against the single storey bungalow without overpowering the proportions of the existing bungalow.

The design is very contempory in design with linked, open but clearly defined spaces. The existing bungalow is not energy efficient and is very cold internally and the overall appearance needs renovating. We have proposed more insulation and timber cladding which will tie in with the extension and improve the appearance and sustainability of the existing bungalow. Planning Permission has been obtained and Building Regulations applied for. Work is about to start on the site.
