Restore a listed building

Restore a listed building with KJ architects

KJ Architects have an extensive range of experience when it comes to restoring listed buildings. Our team of highly skilled architects understand the restrictions and attention to detail needed in order rescue a building and restore it to its former glory.

Whether you want to add an extension onto a listed building, transform the inside, increase safety within the structure or enhance the original features, KJ architects can help.

Listed building restorations

A listing does not prevent decoration or stop you from altering the building, it just means that building consent must be granted before making changes that might affect the special interest.

Listed properties can be altered, extended and even demolished with the consent of the local authority. The specialists at KJ architects offer support to our clients throughout the whole process and will help with applications and the finer details.

You can find out if your building is listed by searching through The National Heritage List for England (NHLE) online.

Depending on the restrictions and your vision, we can transform old and tired buildings into functional, elegant and practical spaces. KJ Architects have worked with both domestic and commercial listed buildings across the UK, enhancing and improving the space for clients.

In 2010 we embarked on a large project to restore and refurbish the King Edward VII Memorial Hall in Newmarket. This building is listed in a conservation area. The property was historic and picturesque, but was no longer fit for purpose. In order to modernise it and create a more functional space, we refurbished the council chamber and public hall, added a new office accommodation, plus a modern kitchen, meeting room and other public facilities within the two storey extension. For more information, you can read the full case study online.

Our architectural experts took on the challenge of restoring Cleveland House, a grade II starred listed building. Once the project was complete, we used the property as an office building for several years.

KJ architects also work on domestic properties throughout the UK, We recently extended a Grade II  listed house, ensuring to keep within the style and era of the rest of the property, whilst modernising the interior to improve functionality for the family. Take a look at the project online.
